Abstract

Architecture and music, as two fundamental artistic realms, have always been closely intertwined with human emotions, perceptions, and thoughts. Music finds its meaning in the dimension of time, revealing inner states and abstract human experiences through rhythm, harmony, and repetition. In contrast, architecture manifests itself in the dimension of space, expressing the very same emotions and thoughts within a physical form composed of space and tangible materials; hence, architecture can be considered as "frozen music." The main question of this research is to identify what common aspects of order can be recognized in music and architecture, and what role this order plays in shaping the aesthetic and practical experience of these two arts. The research methodology is based on documentary study and comparative analysis of historical examples in Iranian-Islamic architecture and the classical music of Iran (Dastgāh system). The findings reveal that fundamental elements of order—such as repetition, symmetry, centrality, rhythm, continuity, numerical proportions, and unity-are prominently present in both arts. In music, these elements lead to harmony and melodic coherence, while in architecture they manifest as spatial proportions, visual harmony, and physical order. The results indicate that despite their apparent differences, music and architecture share profound conceptual foundations; both are based on abstraction and order, and both have been able to provide a shared experience of beauty and meaning for human beings. From this perspective, recognizing the common order in music and architecture can not only enrich theoretical discourse but also provide a foundation for applying aesthetic principles in the design of contemporary spaces. The aim of this paper is to explain the position of this order in architecture, with an emphasis on its practical and aesthetic values, and to demonstrate the path of connection that extends from past artistic traditions to the spatial needs of today.
