Abstract
Unlike many historical sites, the ancient fabric of Shushtar is still livable and provides a living context for the simultaneous study of physical structures and social actions of the past and present. This research was conducted with a qualitative approach, descriptive-analytical method and tools such as document content analysis, field observation and the “archaeology of space” approach. The theoretical framework is based on the concepts of “spatial hierarchy”, “territory” and “social interaction”, and its central question is the pattern of spatial organization of passages and the role of social actions in shaping it. The findings show that the communication network of the ancient fabric, despite the lack of a predetermined plan, has an organic and hierarchical order that has evolved in interaction with the social, cultural and climatic needs of the inhabitants. The “physical components of the territory” – especially the hierarchy of passages (main arteries, secondary routes, private and semi-private passages) – have been an effective tool in shaping the intra-urban network and strengthening social interactions. Socio-cultural principles such as privacy and sanctity have also played a key role in defining the boundaries of the territory, forming the sabats, darbands and residential entrances, and have organized the spatial structure in a way that supports security, social cohesion and spatial hierarchy. Simultaneous analysis of physical and social data shows that public, semi-public and private spaces in Shushtar have not only had a biological function, but also acted as cultural intermediaries to transmit values and strengthen local solidarity.
