Abstract
One of the critical criminology theories that emerged in the 1990s and introduced a systematic interpretation of postmodernism into criminological literature is postmodern criminology, also referred to as eclectic criminology. In contrast to the skeptical strands of postmodernism that have permeated the humanities and social sciences, postmodern criminology offers a constructive approach. While it acknowledges postmodern critiques of modernism-and particularly of positivist empiricism-it rejects nihilism and subjectivism. This theory does not accept the one-dimensional readings of crime found in earlier criminological schools. Instead, by synthesizing various theories from different scientific disciplines and drawing on all intellectual currents that flow into the sea of postmodernism, it seeks a comprehensive analytical framework. Within this perspective, crime is not regarded as an objective, fixed reality. Postmodern criminologists argue that, due to the complexity of human and social relations, complex causation theories—such as chaos theory-are also necessary. In postmodernism, the causes of crime are neither linear nor predictable; rather, they are highly sensitive to initial conditions and not amenable to precise prediction. Accordingly, through an analytical–descriptive method, this study aims to examine and analyze the theoretical and intellectual dimensions of postmodern criminology with respect to crime, including both the conceptualization of crime and the causal explanation of criminal behavior.
