Abstract
Geopolitical developments in the Middle East in recent decades—particularly the intensifying rivalry between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Saudi Arabia—have become a central focus of regional security studies. Saudi Arabia’s defense and security policies in the Middle East have been shaped by the goals of expanding regional influence and containing Iranian power, manifesting across political, military, and coalition-building spheres. Conversely, the Islamic Republic of Iran has adopted a set of security strategies aimed at maintaining the balance of power and ensuring its own national security. This study analyzes the security strategies employed by the Islamic Republic of Iran in response to Saudi Arabia’s defense and security policies in the Middle East. Adopting a descriptive-analytical approach, the study gathers data through library research and the analysis of documents. The findings indicate that Iran has countered Saudi security policies through strategies such as strengthening regional deterrence, expanding regional alliances, utilizing regional diplomacy, and enhancing strategic depth. These strategies have played a significant role in establishing a balance of power vis-à-vis Saudi Arabia’s regional policies.
