Piracy: A threat to peace, international security and regional politics

Abstract
In the present era, global threats such as piracy have become fundamental challenges for the international community. Piracy remains a persistent threat to global peace, international security and regional political stability. Despite the coordinated efforts of the international community, this phenomenon continues to disrupt trade routes, endanger human lives and fuel instability in strategic areas such as the Gulf of Aden, the Strait of Malacca and the Gulf of Guinea. These developments have not only affected legal principles and rules, but also challenged the concept of territorial sovereignty and the responsibility of States. In this article, we will examine the international instruments and Security Council resolutions that have been developed to combat piracy. These resolutions have served as key tools in shaping global policies and facilitating international efforts in this area. Also, new conventions and additional protocols that have been established to strengthen international cooperation in this area will be analyzed. All states have the authority to prosecute and try pirates, regardless of the place of commission and the nationality of the perpetrator or victim. Given the importance of the issue, this study emphasizes the responsibility of states in creating maritime security in combating piracy. The research method in this study is descriptive-analytic.
