Abstract
Poetry, as a reflection of human lived experience, provides a rich ground for understanding how space and place are perceived and represented in the poet’s mind and language. This study, entitled “Examining the Representation of Space and Place in Contemporary Poetry from a Formalist Perspective: A Case Study of ‘Dar An Lahzeh’ by Mehdi Akhavan Sales and ‘Sabad-e Limoo’ by Ahmad Abdolma’ty Hejazi”, aims to investigate, through a descriptive-analytical method and based on the principles of formalist criticism, how space and place function and are constructed within the linguistic and imagistic structures of these two poets. The main research question is how formal and linguistic elements in poetry contribute to creating spatial meanings and representing place in the poet’s and reader’s mind. The research data were collected through close reading of the poetic texts and analyzed based on features such as formal cohesion, sound patterns, repetition, and visual contrasts. The findings indicate that in Akhavan Sales’s poetry, space is predominantly represented as a mental, dark, and passive experience, symbolizing separation and timelessness; whereas in Hejazi’s poetry, place appears more concrete and socially oriented, deriving meaning from the contrast between rural and urban spaces. In both works, space and place are not merely the background of the narrative but active elements in meaning-making and conveying the poet’s worldview. This underscores a profound connection between literary language and the geographical perception of human lived experience.
