The defense diplomacy of the Islamic Republic of Iran has always been used as a key tool in managing the political and security challenges of the periphery, especially towards the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The Kurdistan Region, due to its geopolitical location, shared borders with Iran, and the presence of groups opposed to the Islamic Republic’s regime, has always posed numerous security challenges for Iran. By adopting strategies such as diplomatic engagement with the leaders of the region, strengthening security cooperation with the central government in Baghdad, and confronting the influence of foreign actors such as the United States and the Zionist regime, the Islamic Republic of Iran has tried to maintain its national security and strengthen regional stability while managing regional crises. Meanwhile, the desire of some foreign governments to fuel security crises in the region and support separatist groups has added to the complexity of security equations. The question raised in this article is how have Iran’s defense diplomacy strategies helped manage crises and protect national security in the face of political and security threats to the Kurdistan Region? The findings show that Iran, by emphasizing dialogue, trust-building, and security alignment with Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region, has been able to largely control the threats posed by the presence of armed opposition groups and the movements of trans-regional actors.
