The financial and trade restrictions imposed on a country that is the world’s largest in terms of proven gas reserves and the fourth largest in terms of oil resources could have a negative impact on the world’s financial and energy markets, and undoubtedly on the Middle East economy. In the context of the intensification of sanctions and the shrinking of Iran’s economy, the issue of opening letters of credit and bank guarantees is one of the most important economic and banking issues that must be addressed so that legal and economic solutions can be developed in a researched manner by diagnosing its pathology. With the sharp increase in requirements and expectations related to compliance with sanctions in the past decade, banks have sought various methods to reduce the legal risk of interacting with sanctioned individuals or entities. Including so-called sanctions clauses in commercial contracts is one of these methods. The method of this research is descriptive-analytical, and the aim of the article is to conduct a legal study of Iran’s economic sanctions on letters of credit and bank guarantees.
