Rural tourism is an effective tool in the sustainable development of rural areas and can pave the way for economic growth, strengthening infrastructure, preserving cultural heritage, and improving the quality of life in local communities. However, this type of tourism, along with opportunities, also brings with it numerous social, cultural, and environmental challenges that, if not managed properly, can have irreparable negative consequences on rural areas. Using the analysis of field studies, statistical data, and available scientific resources, this article examines these challenges in detail and their effects on local communities, social structures, and the environment. In this study, economic inequalities resulting from the entry of foreign investors, cultural changes, and the loss of indigenous identity, social conflicts between local residents and tourists, the destruction of natural resources, increased pollution, and the role of tourism in exacerbating climate change are analyzed as the most important negative consequences of rural tourism. In the following, while explaining these problems, solutions are presented to reduce the damage and strengthen the positive aspects of rural tourism. These strategies include educating local communities, involving them in the decision-making process, promoting responsible tourism, formulating environmentally-friendly policies, and utilizing new technologies in natural resource management. The research results show that rural tourism, as a complex phenomenon, requires a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and multifaceted approach in which economic benefits are balanced with social and environmental considerations. Finally, the article emphasizes that the successful development of rural tourism will only be possible if it is managed intelligently, sustainably, and collaboratively.
